Lamon Residence Design by Lana Zellner in collaboration with Karen Zellner
Alterations to the Lamon Residence included a 200sf addition off of the back of the house and renovating the current garage into part of the house. Additionally we provided the design for new decks, a detached garage, a pool and hot tub. Our clients were interested in greening the house as much as possible and we did this through [re]use of materials and a really tight envelope system (new windows, roof, and insulation). After the renovations were complete the house included an open living area for cooking, dining, and living, 3bedrooms, and office area, and 2 bathrooms.
Located on the Connecticut River, it became clear that the view of the river from the back yard was one of the driving conceptual forces for this project. With this in mind we guided the open floor plan toward the back porch and the beautiful views of the river. Additionally the house lies on the fight path for many different species of birds. During our first sight visit we saw the magnificent sight of hundreds of black crows flying above. We brought this factor to life by allowing views to the sky from all bedrooms + living areas.
The primary aesthetic of the home renovation was that of a small suburban/country home with a modern twist. Many of the architectural forms seen in the house speak to that of a traditional home of Longmeadow Massachusetts, but their new open floor plan, opening walls to the river, and bright modern materials allowed this renovation to stand out as anything but traditional.
