Inter:face Design by kristen svorka
Interior Perspective at New Connector
The Interface Center is designed for use by children of elementary school age and is an environment that fosters global connections through technology. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, it will be linked to other centers in the United States and around the world, giving children the opportunity to interact with peers thousands of miles away through interior spaces equipped with multimedia and multi-sensory technology. Through these technologically integrated interiors, children can learn firsthand about new cultures, customs, and ways of life through lessons in the arts, music and dance.
The center is sited in what is currently known as the Barker Playhouse, located on the corner of Benefit Street and Transit Street. The playhouse is comprised of a series of connected buildings: a main theatre space, a workshop, storage space, and a small attached shed. The two main concepts governing the design are: 1. To create connections between people and places via interactive technologies, and 2. To create a connection between two separate buildings via a new architectural “connector”. The program of the center includes an interactive library, gallery, art studio, dance studio and auditorium.
