Exterior Perspective & Floor Plan Highlighting Primary Zones

Five Senses Department Store is sighted in downtown Boston, Massachusetts across the street from the Boston Commons Park. It is a small, specialty department store that carries five boutique brands, each of which relate to one of the five bodily senses. The building is organized so that each of the five brands occupies a floor, with the fifth brand taking residence in the new rooftop addition. 1. Terrior Coffee (taste) 1st floor - A high end coffee shop. 2. Other Music (sound) 2nd floor - Music store specializing in rare and independent labels. It is also used as a performance venue. 3. Lucien Pellat-Finet (touch) 3rd floor - A trendy cashmere clothing and home accesories store. 4. CB (I Hate) Perfume (smell) 4th floor - A fragrance line specializing in unusual and custom scents. 5. Zeiss Camera (sight) Rooftop addition - A manufacturer of high-end cameras, lenses, microscopes, telescopes and other such related equipment.

"Ribbon" Studies

A “ribbon” is used as a continuous wrapper penetrating through the building, which undulates and folds to create a series of distinct programmatic elements. It creates a zone through the middle of each of the stores that highlights the area where the customer comes in the most direct and most intimate contact with the product; the area where the greatest sense stimulation occurs. Portions of the “ribbon” pop up to create display areas for merchandise, areas fold up to become spaces to stand under, and surfaces bend and curve to become seating. The “ribbon”, which is neutral in color and texture, is in essence a blank canvas upon which the brand markets itself.
